Previously, we’ve provided important tips on how to prepare your roof for winter, spring, and fall.
Well, now that we’ve entered the dog days of summer, it’s time to focus our attention there.
Summertime means longer days, warmer weather, and the perfect opportunity to get outside and enjoy all that nature has to offer. But while you’re busy making summer plans, it’s important not to forget about one crucial element of your home–your roof. Just like the rest of your house, your roof needs a little extra TLC during the summer months to stay in top condition.
Today, we look at 4 ways to prepare your roof for summer.
1. Check for Any Signs of Damage and Repair as Needed
You know it’s time to check your roof when you find yourself walking around your house with an umbrella indoors.
Water stains on the ceiling are usually a telltale sign that your roof has seen better days and needs some repair. If you wait too long to fix the problem, you could be in for a very nasty (and expensive) surprise when your ceiling collapses.
So, it’s best to nip the problem in the bud by regularly inspecting your roof for any signs of damage and repairing as needed. Of course, if you’re not comfortable climbing up on your roof, you can always hire a professional to do the job for you.
Just be sure to get several quotes before making a decision, as prices can vary widely. And, of course, never forget that safety comes first!
2. Inspect and Clean Your Gutters
Gutters are one of those things that you don’t really think about until they’re not working properly.
Clogged gutters can cause a whole host of problems, including water damage to your foundation, wet basements, and even mold growth. Be sure to have your gutters inspected and cleaned out. It’s a messy job, but it’s worth it to avoid costly repairs down the road.
And who knows, you might even find a lost tennis ball or two.
3. Check for Any Loose Shingles or Tiles
Checking for loose shingles is an essential part of being a responsible homeowner.
Not only are loose shingles unsightly, but they can also lead to serious damage if left unchecked. Water can seep through gaps in the shingles, leading to rot and mold. In addition, high winds can cause loose shingles to come flying off, posing a serious safety hazard. As a result, it’s important to check for any loose shingles or tiles on a regular basis.
Don’t wait until it’s too late – give your roof a once-over today and make sure everything is tight and secure.
4. Make Sure Your Attic Is Well-Ventilated
As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” But what about June, July, and August?
If your attic isn’t well-ventilated, all that rain can wreak havoc on your roof. That’s because heat and moisture build up in the attic, leading to rot and leaks. Before the storm season hits, take a few minutes to check your attic ventilation. Make sure there are enough vents to allow air to circulate freely, and that they’re not blocked by debris.
Summer is a great time to get your roof inspected to make sure it’s in good condition for the hot weather ahead. By catching any problems now, you can save yourself money and headaches down the road. If you’re not sure where to start, reach out to an experienced roofer who can help you out.
