You look out your windows every day, but when you do, you’re rarely thinking about the windows themselves.
It’s easy for you to forget about your windows entirely. But it is worth your while to think about them, their function, and their value occasionally. Repairing and replacing your windows can make your home more functional, beautiful, comfortable, and more.
If you’re not used to assessing your windows, here is how to know when it is time to replace or repair them.
When It’s Time to Repair
When should you consider making repairs to your windows?
Essentially any time that something minor or fixable is wrong with them. Not everyone knows the signs that a window has been damaged. Here are some signs that your window could benefit from some repair:
- It is hard to open or close: Does your window seem to get stuck as you move it? Does it not latch properly? Or is it impossible to open or to fully close? Usually, these types of problems can be easily repaired and restore your window to full functionality.
- Some element is broken: Small cracks, bends, gaps and other issues with different parts of the window can often be repaired instead of replaced. That includes dried and chipped caulking.
- There are missing parts: Don’t assume that your window has everything it requires. Many miss key elements, like the exterior drip sash.
- The frame or casing has worn down: Parts of the frame or casing can be repaired if they have suffered damage.
- It suffered minor water damage: Small leaks from the window or from something else nearby can cause minor damage to the window and may require repair.
When It’s Time to Replace
Window replacement is more expensive than most window repair jobs.
However, there are still some very good reasons to do it. Window replacement can end up saving you money and hassle in the long run. It can also help make your home more comfortable and more valuable. Here are some signs it is time to replace your window outright:
- It is old: Older windows that will soon need additional repairs may not be worth repairing. It is often more cost-effective to just replace them.
- There is internal condensation: When a window is foggy, the seal has broken and released the valuable air inside, which makes the window insulated. Repairing the seal won’t get the gas back, so you need to replace the window.
- It suffered major water damage: When you have major water damage, you will most likely need to replace the windows to make them functional.
- There are structural problems: Serious warping and other structural issues usually indicate replacement.
- They are very inefficient: You may be able to reduce your energy bills by replacing very inefficient windows.
Taking the time to replace or repair your windows is an investment in your home and your comfort, and is well worth considering.
